So this is my first class of Study Skills subject. All the students are combined at Titiwangsa Hall and learned the first chapter in this subject which is “Getting Ready to Learn“ by Encik Fauzi bin Azmi. He always reminded us that university life is different than school life. He also told us that we need to throw our childish attitude.
In class, he taught us about the characteristics of successful student which is :

- Strategic learner
- Self-regulated learner
Than, he also taught us that our learning style also affect our ability to succeed in university. “Learning style is important to us” he told. It is because it will affect to our result. There's a lot that I've learned in that week. Before class ended, he advised that we need to study hard to achieve success in future.
In conclusion, we need to prepared our mental and physical before learning something new in university so that we will not be shock.
WEEK 2
"LIBRARY AND CAMPUS RESOURCES"
Can you guess the picture above? Library? Yeah, you're right.
Library is the place that students can get any information to refer. In addition, it is the best place for us to do some revision with our friends.
This week I was taken to the library to learn about library and campus resources. Ms Fatihah or well known as Cik Nor is responsible for teaching us this week. Cik Nor is one of the librarians in UiTM Raub Campus.
Cik Nor has introduced us with the facilities that have been provide for the convenience of our students. For an example, scientific literature such as books, newspaper, magazine, vcd's, maps and so on. Other than that, this library also provide computer and reading room.
There's a few rules that we need to follow, 1. You must wear a proper suit
2. Can borrow maximum 20 books in 14 days.
3. 20 cent penalty will be given if you are late returning the books that you borrow.
4. You must bring the matrix card.
This week, I've learned about how to borrow and find books online by using Web Opac. Web Opac is the website that can we use to find and borrow books easing using computer. Not only that, we also can make a reservation for the book that we wanted to borrow. Besides, we can also browse UiTM’s library website to get reference materials through “Online Article” and “E-Books”.In addition, we can also obtain a collection of exam papers of previous years as a review material through EQPS.
The library also provide some facilities for use students. There a lot of facilities are provided but I'll mention just three of it. The rest you can ask our librarian such as Cik Fatihah, En. Sulaiman, En. Anwar and many more. First of all, this library provide a reading room at the first floor. It will be open for 24 hours. So that students will have a suitable place to do study group. Next is ICT Room. This room provide a lot of computer to be use by students. So if students don't have a laptop or computer to do assignments, they come here to use it. Lastly, they also provide a numerous of computer just only to use Web Opac. I know it was hard to find the book in this huge library. So you can use it for your convenience as well.
Okay, i think that's all for this week. I'll update the next lesson next week.
WEEK 3
"MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION "
Learning session this week continued with a description of memory, learning and improving concentration taught by Mrs Shamsina. She is a strict lecturer but kind. She gave us some motivation so that we will not easily give up in studies.
Okay, let's talk about what I've learned this week. This week I have learned about memory strategies. Memory strategies will help students in their encoding, storing and retrieving the information. Memory strategies is used on how to improve your memory. There is numerous types of memory which is:
- Sensory Memory
- Short-term Memory
- Long-term Memory
All the information we have learned will faded if we did not used to keep reminding of it. So we need to improve our memory so that we can remember important information much longer than usual. Memory strategies has two types which is general memory strategies and specific memory strategies.
General Memory Strategies :
It can help you acquire, retain and retrieve course information.
- Spaced Practice
- Break Task Down
- Repetition
- Overlearning
Specific Memory Strategies :
this is an effective strategies to help you to learn and remember.
1. Rehearsal Strategies
- Low Level
- High Level
2. Elaboration Strategies
- Association
- Acronyms or Catchword
Learning how information is stored and retrieved in the human brain learning how memory works may help you better understand why you need to be actively involved with your course material as you complete day to day assignments and prepare for exams. To learn anything, we must encode it make it meaningful. At that point, we must rehearse the material to move it from short-term to long-term memory. The more organized the information is as we store it, the
more easily we’ll be able to locate it later retrieve it.
more easily we’ll be able to locate it later retrieve it.
WEEK 4
This week I have learned new topic which is Academic Integrity and Performance. Mrs Nur Afzan Najid was in charge to teach us about this topic. She had taught us about the plagiarism. Plagiarism is an act of using or closely imitating the language and thought of another author without authorization. She told that that activity is not good to us and we must avoid it.
There is numerous examples of plagiarism :
- Turning in someone else's work as your own.
- Copying idea or word from someone's else without giving credit.
- Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks.
We can prevent it by planning your paper through consult your advisor, plan your paper and take effective notes. When you writing your paper, you need to cite the source make so that it will be clear who said that. By the way, you need to know how to paraphrase
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

WEEK 6
“TAKING LECTURE NOTES”
This week I've learned the chapter six which is “taking lecture notes” brought by Sir Kamil Ariff bin Khalid. This chapter has two part. The first part is ‘why taking lecturer notes’. In this part, lecturer taught us the reason we are taking the notes. There is numerous reasons which is :
- We can become an active listener
- To accurate record of information
- To interpret, condense and organized information
- Repetition of material
Besides before taking the notes, lecturer told that we need to read before class. By doing this, we can identify what is the main idea and the key term. Furthermore, we need to get ready earlier and sit in front of the class so that we can hear what lecturer want to teach more clear. By doing this, we can motivated our friends to sit with us. Last in this part, there is a few steps on how to become an active listener :
- Read before the lecture
- Review last set of notes
- Decide what to listen
- Focus
- Listen with an open mind
- Control emotional
- Listen main point
- Ask and answer the question to/from the lecturer.
Then, the second part we've learned is ‘Effective Notes Taking System’. in this part, lecturer taught us on how to take notes effectively and introduced to us about the Cornell Notes Taking System.
In the notes, we need to include the heading, the detail such as fact and explanation, definition, enumeration, example and anything is repeated / written by lecturer.
So I think that's all for this week and I will come back later.
